![]() The concept honor can, in other words, appear as both something cultural (external), and something personal (internal), and I will attempt to illustrate this differentiation when giving examples from the chosen fantasy series.Įthics is, according to Martha Nussbaum, so much more than merely reflecting upon the question “What is right and wrong?” in a given setting. Internal honor, as I understand it, has, then, to do with the way you feel about yourself and the choices you make when confronted with ethical dilemmas, and thus closer to the concept integrity (Stewart 1994, 51). External honor could for instance be explained with something like “the way others regard you, measured against some moral standard (cultural)”, and thus more oriented towards for instance reputation on the list of associated words. One way of understanding honor, is, as initially noted, as dividable into respectively external and internal honor (Stewart 1994, 34–42). The term is often somewhat associated with words like respect, prestige, glory, credit, reputation, praise etc., and the term could contain all of these associated words, or it could be something in-between. Or maybe I should say “especially today”, as it is easier than ever to learn about ‒ and count these various honor cultures and how they co-exist side by side within nations or cities through the media or on the Internet. The definition of − and view upon – the concept has changed drastically throughout history, and varies considerably from culture to culture, even today. Honor, to start with that, can be many different things. Owners report that their favorite things about the HR-V are (in descending order) the exterior styling, driving dynamics, visibility and safety, interior design, and seats. Still, that’s less than the 85% of small SUV owners who agree with that sentiment. Surprisingly, 76% of Honda HR-V owners agree that they like a vehicle that offers responsive handling and powerful acceleration. And it keeps doing it, without any kind of complaint, for several hours on end. Before we discuss the results of our evaluation of the Honda HR-V, it is helpful to understand who buys this small SUV, and what they like most and least about their HR-Vs. The powertrain works well, and the chassis gives a pleasant combination of suppleness to absorb bumps and firmness to not wallow around corners. The space around the driver is well laid out, with plenty of cup- and phone-holder options. The steering is nicely weighted and accurate, with reasonable feel considering the competition.Īnd while I still prefer driving a Mazda CX-3, the HR-V is a close second in the class and makes a strong case as the road-tripping leader. Despite a slightly high center-of-gravity and narrow front and rear track, the Honda mirco-ute feels stable and agile all at once. By the way, while averaging 66 mph, I achieved 27.3 mpg.Ģ019 Honda HR-V: Say goodbye to the manual transmissionĭynamically speaking, the HR-V benefits by learning moves from its Civic and Accord siblings. Wind noise, at interstate speeds is a touch high too, however the HR-V is plenty competitive in its class. Generally speaking, continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) aren’t great, but Honda’s is among the best in the segment. But, know that the engine/transmission combination will whine about it. If you really need to get moving to, say, pass on a two-lane highway, the HR-V will get it done. ![]() Honda’s little naturally aspirated motor bumps out adequate power in most any situation. Along the same vein, the Touring is also the only trim to get LED headlights, though LED brake lights come on all HR-V models. GO COOGS: Lizzo stops by her alma mater, the University of Houston ![]() Anvil transcends the sometimes niche position of the documentary to deliver a truly extraordinary piece of cinema. That level of connection is rare in dramatic films and practically unheard of in documentaries but Anvil creates and holds that tension in a perfect cinematic moment. As a viewer you desperately want things to work out for Anvil, just this once, and you will it to happen. As they walk through the tunnel to the stage there is a genuine surge of adrenaline and a moment of real emotion. Lips' voice-over combines his almost trademarked acceptance with the tiniest glimmer of hope a hope which has never been totally extinguished in 30 years. There is a moment in Anvil! when the band arrives at an important gig already expecting it to be almost empty. The difference between a moment that is funny and one that transcends mere humour to become uncomfortable and even emotional is all in the editing and Gervasi knows exactly when to cut to make the movie most affecting. Having such great, trusting subjects is certainly half the battle and the sheer cavalcade of bad luck which they attract is a bonus but Gervasi shows remarkable restraint in every aspect of the film-making, particularly the editing. Gervasi's work behind the camera is extraordinary. Even when their situation is being ridiculed it is never at the expense of the band and their determination shines through as their defining attribute. He toured with them as a roadie in the 80s and his love for the guys and what they do can be seen in every frame. Anvil's humour is tempered by a huge amount of respect, channelled through Gervasi's coverage of the band. Indeed it is the humour of the movie which makes it most memorable, with a barrage of major and minor disasters on the European tour reducing the audience to speechless, breathless, hernia-inducing laughter. If they ever decide to give up on Anvil (unlikely) they would make a great comedic duo. Lips' melodramatic, snivelling, lip quivering apologies are some of the highlights of the film, with Robb's increasingly uncomfortable reactions a joy to watch. Robb is his calm and Zen-like foil (with a penchant for scatological art) and their exchanges are never less than entertaining but are also surprisingly emotional. Prone to violent outbursts and equally sudden, heartfelt apologies he is the heart of the band but also its biggest liability. Lips is the typically mercurial lead guitarist. Lips and Robb have complimentary but very different characters. Anvil is an inspirational story of blind commitment and the bond between friends. ![]() At this point, their commitment to Anvil seems relatively benign until Lips gets word from an Eastern European woman he met online (yes, really) that she has organised a full European tour for them and suddenly they see one final opportunity to give Anvil the success it deserves. This is a band that really doesn't do it for the money but for the love of the music and the (sometimes disturbing) devotion of the few remaining fans. Now in their 50s they have kept Anvil ticking over, supporting themselves with menial jobs and persisting despite the exasperation of their friends and loved ones. Lips and Robb have been playing music together since they were 14. Sacha Gervasi's documentary traces the bands unfortunate history and catches up with them 30 years later, capturing the amazing story of their last-ditch attempt to snatch fame from the jaws of obscurity. That band was Anvil and footage from a massive concert in Japan shows them sharing the stage with Jon Bon Jovi and Whitesnake, destined to be just as successful as their peers. They are all united in their praise for one group which served as an inspiration to each of them in the early 80s. Anvil! The Story of Anvil begins with testimonials from members of some of the biggest bands of all time from Guns n' Roses to Metallica. ![]() The standout example has to be The Last of Us Part II, designed with blind and low vision consultants, the game is possible to find your way through even with no useful vision. Some of my favourite games bring together these elements to make exploring a virtual world a treat rather than a chore. As in games like The Last of Us Part II this can include a camera view that will snap in the right direction, arrows or pointers, haptic feedback, audio cues or dialogue. Directional Cues: Once you have reached your destination, prompts or clues about where you might find what you are looking for are also important.Alternatively, making objectives obvious using lighting, key colours or camera views can make a game more navigable without adding complicated HUD mechanics. As in games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, it’s even better when you can customize these symbols so they are larger or appear more frequently. Objectives: Giving objectives, missions, collectables or even key interactions different colours or symbols means you can learn your way around a game quickly. As in games like Horizon Zero Dawn features like a compass, distance counter or radar can all be used to indicate in which direction an objective is. Head Up Displays: Heads Up Display or Navigational Display provides information about the relationship between your character or avatar and the space they are existing in.As in games like Spider-Man, it’s important that the world map is available from the beginning and supported by an easy to follow mini-map permanently on screen. Maps: A great starting point for being able to find your way around a game is a clear and detailed map.The games in this list make exploring a virtual world smoother and finding your next mission fun rather than frustrating! There are some important factors that make games easier to navigate and can support you to improve your way-finding skills: ![]() Not knowing where to go or feeling confused about how to move from one location to another can be a challenge for many gamers, including new or younger players, low vision gamers like me and those with cognitive impairments. However, getting unintentionally lost in a game is an all too common and very frustrating experience. Studies have shown that gaming improves both spatial awareness and navigation skills. I often face barriers when navigating the world, so it’s thrilling when I get to experience driving a fast car in the dystopian London of Watch Dogs Legion, swinging through New York as Spider-Man or climbing a mountain on a secret pirate island as Nathan Drake in Uncharted 4. This is particularly important to me as a low vision gamer. One of the joys of gaming are the places you get to explore that you would never be able to visit in real life.
